Lottie’s 4-Week Board & Train Transformation: From Leash Struggles to Stronger Obedience

Dog training isn’t always about teaching a dog to sit or stay. For many families, the biggest challenges happen during everyday life—walking through the neighborhood, greeting people at the door, or trying to get their dog to come when called.

Lottie came to Perfected Canine Obedience in Cincinnati, Ohio for a 4-week Board & Train program with several important goals: improving her leash walking, reducing jumping and developing better recall.

After four weeks of structured training, Lottie finished strong and made meaningful progress across each of these areas.

Lottie’s Training Goals

When Lottie arrived, her family primarily wanted help with:

  • Leash walking
  • Jumping
  • Recall
  • General obedience and manners

These are some of the most common issues dog owners experience, and they can make everyday life with a dog much more difficult.

A dog that pulls on the leash can make walks frustrating. Jumping can become a problem when greeting family members or guests. And unreliable recall can make it difficult to safely give your dog more freedom.

Improving Leash Walking

One of Lottie’s primary goals was becoming better on the leash.

Leash training is about more than simply preventing a dog from pulling. It involves teaching the dog how to pay attention to their handler, respond to direction and maintain appropriate behavior while experiencing distractions.

Throughout Lottie’s Board & Train program, leash skills were incorporated into her daily training.

Working on Jumping

Jumping is another common behavior that many dog owners want to change.

Dogs may jump because they are excited, seeking attention or simply haven’t learned an appropriate way to greet people.

Lottie’s training focused on building better manners and teaching her that calm behavior is more rewarding than jumping.

Building Better Recall

Recall is one of the most important obedience skills a dog can learn.

A reliable recall gives owners a better way to communicate with their dog and can provide additional control in appropriate environments.

Lottie worked on responding to her handler and building a stronger foundation for coming when called.

A Stronger Obedience Foundation

One of the biggest benefits of a structured Board & Train program is that dogs get repeated opportunities to practice throughout the day.

Lottie’s four weeks weren’t about teaching one isolated command. Her training focused on building better communication, obedience, focus, leash manners and impulse control.

By the end of her program, Lottie finished strong!
